We have loads of ants here too during the warmer months. I have been leaving whole bay leaves about on the floor which seems to help.
In SC we have a lot of problems with ants. Try this: after you clean your counters, whipe them down in undiluted white vinagar. they do not like the smell. If you do use bug spray, if you spray UNDER the house and AROUND the house, it will help a create a barrier around the house.
